A Little Familiar by R. Cooper5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (funnily enough, given the retrospective treatment here this afternoon). In truth, I’d say the part is tailor made for Robert Downey Jr. For a time David Fincher was looking into it with Keanu Reeves in the starring role as a high-strung two-time Michelin Star chef dodging drug dealer debts and mixing it up from Paris to New York. On the latter, it’s a fantastic script and an unbelievably meaty role. Earlier today it was announced that Steven Spielberg will be tackling “American Sniper” with Cooper in the lead role as the most lethal sniper in US military history, while he attached himself to the Steven Knight-scripted “Chef” not too long ago. Russell’s “American Hustle” and smartly backed away from the on-going circus that is “Jane Got a Gun” this week. Bradley Cooper has been moving right along with his post-“Silver Linings” playbook. ![]()

My Life and Thought by Albert Schweitzer5/13/2023 ![]() "Reverence for Life says that the only thing we are really sure of is that we live and want to go on living. James Brabazon, author of Albert Schweitzer: A Biography, defined Reverence for Life as follows: Reverence for Life affords me my fundamental principle of morality, namely, that good consists in maintaining, assisting and enhancing life, and to destroy, to harm or to hinder life is evil." In Civilization and Ethics, Schweitzer wrote: "Ethics is nothing other than Reverence for Life. ![]() The phrase Reverence for Life is a translation of the German phrase: " Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben." These words came to Albert Schweitzer on a boat trip on the Ogooué River in French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon), while searching for a universal concept of ethics for our time. Priest series sierra simone5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() I believe that made him more human and relatable. In that aspect, Priest delivered what I expected – shock value in term of filthy unadulterated sex. The promise of a taboo story was as enticing as the forbidden fruit. ![]() When I first came across Priest, I knew this would be something I’d want to read. ![]() ![]() I saw only a woman in need-ripe, delicious need. I stopped seeing a lost lamb in need of a shepherd. In fact, stay away from this review too because it contains quotes that might be deemed offensive. If you cannot handle such materials, stay away from this book. It will provoke your beliefs and might greatly offend some people. Together, there’s no telling who’s the saint and who’s the sinner.īefore I start, it is important to note that this book is an erotica that pushed the boundary on religious matters. He could use her worldly knowledge, while she could use his spiritual guidance. To get away from all that, she hid in the small town to re-examine her purpose in life. But her beauty and expensive education seemed more like a curse to her. Poppy Danforth was a blue blood from a big city. Life seems to be on the right track until a newcomer came to town. He was very much loved by his parish for his work in revitalizing the local church and community. Tyler Anselm Bell was a young, attractive priest of a small town. ![]()

Aristotle metaphysics book 75/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Third, I discuss the character of Reeve's notes, which are the primary apparatus he uses to guide us through the Metaphysics in his translation. Second, I describe the structure and content of Reeve's version. In this review, first, I mention some existing English translations of Aristotle's Metaphysics. Reeve manages the competing demands of these two audiences well, particularly when it comes to the translation. ![]() The price point is higher than some student texts, but still reasonable if this were the main text for a course on Aristotle. Hackett produces useable, affordable translations of ancient texts, aimed primarily at teachers and learners and secondarily at researchers. The treatise we know as Aristotle's Metaphysics is central to both teaching and researching Aristotle. HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A MERRY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS! WE WILL RESUME PUBLICATION ON JANUARY 10, 2017 ![]()

Ghost hunter hans holzer5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() He travelled the world, uncovering a 19th-century admiral in New Hampshire, "left-behinds" in Connecticut and a haunted Swiss train. Holzer took a master's degree in comparative religion and claimed a doctorate in parapsychology at a London College of Applied Science (not, it appears, London, England). After studying Japanese, he tried to make a living in showbusiness, writing for a short-lived comedy revue and musical. Hans Holzer, who has died aged 89, was born in Vienna, studied archaeology, ancient history and numismatics at the University of Vienna but left Austria with his family in 1938. Holzer was undeterred, publishing two novels based on the story. Local historians disputed the idea that there had been a burial ground at the site, and descendants of the Montaukett Indians pointed out that they had been the original inhabitants of Amityville. ![]() The murderer, he suggested, had become possessed by the chief. ![]() Holzer took photographs of bullet holes from the murders, around which mysterious halos appeared. Holzer visited the house with a medium who claimed to have channelled an angry Shinnecock Indian, Chief Rolling Thunder, who said the house stood on an ancient Indian burial ground. ![]()

![]() Agoncillo lived on Quezon Avenue and Constantino on Panay Avenue. Agoncillo’s name came up again in 2002 during a controversy over the renaming of Panay Avenue into Renato Constantino Avenue. It is unfortunate that I wasn’t able to ask Agoncillo to confirm or deny this story in the series of conversations we had in 1984, now published as “Talking History” (UST Publishing, 2011). Agoncillo-were still alive, so they had to concede to someone obscure but long dead. When I asked why the longest road in Metro Manila was named after a historian and former National Library director, the apocryphal story given me was that at the time of the renaming, a contemporary Filipino historian was preferred but then all the short-listed ones-Gregorio Zaide, Horacio de la Costa, and Teodoro A. WHEN PEOPLE ask about the story of Edsa, we have to go beyond People Power 1986 to a time when then Highway 54 was renamed from a bland generic to honor Epifanio de los Santos (1871-1928). ![]() |
